Geographical introduction
The complex of Castello Canavese is placed in a dominating position of great faunistic importance, very close to an important affluent of the Po river, whose spring is placed in the Mont Blanc, in the Aosta Valley.
Short historical mention
The first news of the castle date back to XV century a.C., when this fortress was built by the Celts, whose queen, the priestess Ypa, chose as her own private residence.
In 175 a.C. the consul Appio Claudio transformed it into a small fort to fight a celtic population, direct descendant of the Allobrogi tribe, who came down to the Aosta Valley due to a population growth.
It was in 1316 that was built the actual manor and the house-fort by a prestigious family from Piedmont, descendant of the mythical Arduino, who in 1002 was erected King of Italy by a group of vassals.
This castle housed important : Vittorio Emanuele II King of Italy, Camillo Benso of Cavour and the Zar of Russia Nicola II.
The last restoration, made by the current owners, has brought this property back to its ancient splendour.
Description of the buildings:
The complex is composed of two main constructions: a smaller one, dating back to XIV Century and a bigger one of XV Century.
The biggest castle (2600 square metres of internal surface)
In the cellars of this building is placed the first international Museum of Tortures with stocks coming from all over Europe.
From the Noble court we reach the two main floors where there are two rooms of Celtic origins and three dating back to 700. From the southern part, instead, there is the courtyard of the Orangerie with two informal rooms for cultural events and private parties.
On the upper floor there is the beautiful "Arm Room”, which dates back to 400.
The large Piazza d’Armi is placed within the boundary wall as well as the beautiful gardens with valuable plants, evocative corners and a wide terrace enjoying a wonderful view.
The smaller castle (1200 square metres of internal surface)
This smaller construction is completely restored and currently inhabited by the owners. It boasts 44 rooms for a total surface of 1200 square metres.
Inside the wood is placed a liberty hunting lodge.
The land included in the sale extends for 10 hectares, divided into: private park, fruit garden and woodland, part of which is a naturalistic area with valuable flor-faunistic area. |
