Originally dating to the Etruscan period, this charming residence was completely renovated and greatly expanded in 1880 to create a striking Neo-Gothic castle. The existing structure was commissioned by Romeo Gallenga, a nobleman from Piedmont who had recently married Mary Montgomery Stuart, a Lady of the Scottish royal family, and who acquired the property as their family estate. Perugian architect Nazzareno Biscarini then enlisted the skills of local craftsmen, including the noted artist Matteo Tassi and several other painters, sculptors, and designers, to complete his artistic vision. The remarkable home spans 2,700 square meters of palatial architecture and opulent living spaces, along with more than 800 square meters of stables and related buildings, for a total of about 3,500 square meters, or 37,674 square feet. A complete external restoration by renowned local architect Paolo Ceccarelli is now close to completion, following several years of intensive effort. In addition, the interiors have been largely refurbished, though some areas will require further attention. The stables and annexes will need signifcant work to be brought up to the standard of the rest of the property.

 

HISTORY MEETS COMFORT: The impressive castle encompasses 35 rooms on five floors. The structure is crowned by an octagonal tower with a marvellous rooftop terrace, from which visitors may enjoy 360-degree views over the landscape surrounding Perugia, with rolling hills and verdant fields. A perfectly preserved original portal frames the main entrance, which opens to a wide variety of ground-level communal areas. The tapestry room has ornate windows that draw in warm natural light. ROOM TO GROW: A gorgeous library with an incredibly detailed frescoed ceiling is found on the second level, in the company of many other carefully designed and decorated spaces. Servants’ quarters dominate the third floor, while the attic level—though in need of somerestoration work—boasts a lovely wood-beamed ceiling. Ample storage and a large wine cellar are found in the basement, which also offers direct access to the garden and greenhouses. This space would be ideal for the creation of a home wellness centre and an indoor swimming pool. A total of 28 bedrooms grace the main levels of the home—augmented by several more in the basement, attic, and tower—offering an incomparable capacity for entertaining on a grand scale.
